The Court Security Officer will work in a Court Room and will perform all duties that are required of a Court Security Officer to provide all of the courtroom participants with a safe environment. Duties include, but are not limited to maintaining order in the courtroom, assisting the judicial officer (Judge or Magistrate), watch for security concerns or safety hazards, and ensuring that all litigants, as well as members of the public respect courtroom decorum and behave in a respectful manner.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITY:

Specific Duties and Essential Functions

  • Maintain order in the Court Room at all times
  • Provide a safe environment for the courtroom participants
  • Watch for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards
  • Ensure that all courtroom participants follow courtroom decorum and behave in a respectful manner
  • Interact with courtroom participants as needed, maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Watch for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

Education, Licenses and Certifications Required

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL)
  • Must be able to pass any state or site required training

Type and Length of Specific Experience Required

  • Must possess a minimum of five (5) years of experience in Law Enforcement, Corrections, Military Police, or Court Security

Skills Required

  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Active listening skills
  • Ability to assess and evaluate situations effectively
  • Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately
  • Attention to detail

Other

  • Must be at least 21 years old or the minimum age required by the state, if higher
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a foreign citizen authorized to legally work in the United States
  • Be able to work flexible schedules and respond to work assignments with little to no advance notice
  • Be able to operate radio or telephone equipment and/or console monitors
  • Demonstrated ability to interact cordially and communicate with the public
  • Subject to a drug screen to the extent permitted by law
  • Must be able to provide, upon job offer, a DD214 discharge document with discharge status indicated, if prior military

Physical Requirements and Environment

Environment:        Indoor and outdoor, temperature ranges from moderate to extreme cold/heat

Major activity:       Walking, standing, speaking, listening, observing

Physical efforts to carry out job duties:  Standing, walking, sitting, with minimal to no stooping or kneeling
